Patterned Leggings

February 16th, 2010 -

So what if a girl doesn’t shave her legs in the winter? It’s not like she’ll be showing off any leg in a miniskirt any time soon. That’s why we love leggings. Not to mention how uber comfy they are. Swap a sweatshirt and house shoes for a long, elegant sweater and heels and you’ve discovered the fashionable flexibility a good pair of leggings offers to a wardrobe.

But, as with any good trend, someone takes it too far. We’re talking printed leggings. Bright teal and lime green leopard print nylons, gingham-infused fishnets (yes, it has been done). Giant pink polkadots all over your calves and thighs. Excuse me, um, HOW is this flattering?

Here’s the skinny on patterned leggings, what’s hot, what’s not, and those we wouldn’t mind losing in the dryer…

Vertical stripes + black and blue + animal print leggings = 12,456 Hail Marys. Like the TV, print leggings add 10 pounds. So, unless you have 0% body fat, stay away from thick, bold prints on your thighs.

Pants are pants. Leggings are leggings. This is not paint-pants-on-by-number.

Now, this we can do. Tall black boots and a muted patternless sweater leave a little room for some flair. This small black and white floral print doesn’t bombard the eyes, but gives a girl some funky freedom.

When wearing loud shoes and a patterned dress, stick with a single colored- legging.  A small horizontal pattern adds length to the leg.

Know Your Fabrics: a Fashion Tutorial

January 5th, 2010 -

Ever looked at a dress tag and read “silk satin mix with tulle and taffeta lining. Dry clean only.” What the heck does that MEAN, you ask? Well, we’re here to fine-tune your knowledge on fabrics. This is vital info, so pay attention. Your prom dress depends on it.

Plus, once you read, you’re totally authorized to toss around fancy schmancy fabric names like you’re Anna Wintour.

Chiffon

A light, flowy fabric used in many prom dress styles. It fits great on most body types, and is generally layered on other fabrics. Chiffon can be made from silk, nylon and cotton.

Silk

A natural fabric, shimmery, elegant. Silk comes in different blends, like silk Georgette, silk-satin (a combo of silk weaved with satin), or silk crepe (a gauzy or wrinkled texture).

Organza

Feels like silk. It’s a blend of silk filaments, polyester and nylon. Lightweight, sheer and breezy fabric.

Satin

A weave of different blends that make a shimmery, high luster material. When cotton is added, satin becomes sateen, a softer, but not durable fabric. So don’t step on your hem.

Taffeta

A stiff woven fabric made from natural silk or synthetic fibers. Yarn-dyed silk taffeta is generally used for prom dresses since it’s much stiffer than piece-dyed silk taffeta–which is generally used for inner linings of dresses and coats. In Persian, the term means “twisted woven.”

Tulle

A lightweight, tiny netting fabric made from rayon, nylon or other fibers. Generally stiff and gives a dress poof and flair, despite its lightness. It adds bulk and generally comes in layers.

Velvet

A heavy fabric with a soft pile typically found in vintage gowns. At one time, velvet was made only from silk fibers, but today velvet can be made from cotton and other synthetic materials to create velvet varieties, like crushed velvet, velour and velveteen. Not like the rabbit.

Alright, ladies. Choose your fabric, and shop on!

Neon-feel the vibe for prom

December 26th, 2009 -

A72243_prom
Remember those funky Laffy Taffy-colored rubber bracelets and pony tail holders? Did those blinding hues have a name? Nope. We called it neon. Besides some smarty pant’s addition to the chemical periodic table, what IS neon, anyway?

“Adjective. Of, pertaining to, or characteristic of a tawdry urban district or of gaudy nighttime entertainment,” according to some online dictionary.

Mmm…sounds like fun to us. That’s right–neon’s back. But not in a trashy club kinda way. Neon is next prom season’s hottest way to vamp up drab color–if worn right. So ditch black this year (slim isn’t in. We want curves). Stay out of the shadows and sparkle in the black lights. Feel the vibe with neon threads and don’t be afraid to glow in the dark…

This season, set fuchsia on fire.

Bolder is better. When choosing a nail  polish color–think Bright Lights.

Bundle Up and Stay Bodacious

December 2nd, 2009 -

Winter formal coming up? Avoid goosebumps with these trendy tips.

No one wants to step out of a limo in a frumpy, Victorian, turtleneck dress just to stay warm during fancy wintry occasions. To avoid shivering and stay shimmering on your big night, use these vital tips to nip those goose bumps in the bud.

Cocktail_Dress

- Flaunt the right shawl or jacket for your dress. Pair a loose-armed, cropped cashmere jacket with a slim gown. Faux fur wraps match well with silk fabric, but avoid mixing sequins and fur. There is no glamour in gaudy.

- Wearing a fuller gown? Avoid bulk by wearing a thin wrap around your shoulders and an up-do to balance fabric usage.

- If your dress is simple and classic, take advantage of the season and go velvet with a stole or jacket.

- On breezy winter nights, steer clear of large, revealing cutouts in your gown’s torso. A chilly draft on the tummy or back? No thanks.

- Hose aren’t just for Grandma. Skin tone panty hose give your legs a sleek, evenly colored sheen. No more frozen toes in stilettos this February.

- Elbow-length gloves keep arms toasty. Pair gloves with bare, slim dresses and strapless gowns. For fuller dresses or sleeved shoulders, wrist-length gloves do the trick. Avoid too tight gloves with elastic that leave marks on your wrists or upper arms.

- With gloves, wraps, stoles and jackets, make sure your accessory’s fabric doesn’t clash with your dress. Avoid prints on accessories, unless it’s minimal and faint. Loud prints on accessories will draw attention away from your fabulous dress, hair and face.

- Wear your hair down to keep your neck and shoulders cozy. With this no-fuss tip, you will save cash and body heat on your big night out.

Remember, you can always check accessories at the door. So go strapless and stay snug this winter in your elegant evening gown with our hot selection of toasty ideas.

Leggings for Spring

November 24th, 2009 -

Everyone’s talking about it. Don’t stash those leggings in the back of a drawer when spring rolls around. When the birds and bees start buzzin, leggings and legwear will be a must-have accessory. A few looks we found that could work with a cute cocktail dress…and a few that should never have left the drawing board.

Here’s our prediction of pretty panty hose…

Some daring designs that could pair well with a simple cut dress and low-key pumps.

wolford_legwear_20090171The itty bitty polka dots add a bit of playful flair to a light pink or white sweetheart mini for a spring dance.

spring-legwear-shopping-4Exhibit A: Nix the floral print. Exhibit B: Orange retro. Gross. Exhibit C: Definite yes.

Basically, for leggings, we like slimming black with a little funk to spice up a spring ensemble.

Mmm! Can’t wait to shop for warm weather!

Forever 21 Launches Beauty Line

November 23rd, 2009 -

We admit, when shopping at the mall, we make a bee line to Forever 21 like it’s going out of style.

Which it’s not. The highly successful runway-to-retail chain store snags the latest looks and shimmies down the price–making the Forever 21 logo a staple in most American tween and young adult’s wardrobe–and a few anonymous mom’s.

Now, the Target of fashion chains aims to fill vanity drawers and makeup bags along with closets. Forever 21 just launched its initial beauty product line called Love and Beauty. Not the catchiest of names, but we’ll take a look–for our wallets’ sake.

70293400-01

A clear scented lip gloss with “super moisturizing action” infused with real flowers. Perfect for spring. A mere $2.80. (What’s with the oddball prices? We still haven’t figured that one out.)

60207019-01Manicure set for $2.50? Questionable…do the scissors actually cut?

63246904-01Daisy Blond Mirror Compact for $3.50. Cute!

70356868-01Luscious. We love it. $2.80. Steal.

72732661-01

“Love Struck” roll-on fragrance. $7.80. Smells like “a sultry blend of Freesia, Tahitian Mango, Mandarin Orange, and Exotic Sandalwood.” Sounds like something you should sniff first, but the package is cute.

70116154-05“Happy Hour” lip gloss. $2.80. Sounds fun. Catchy name. Can we only wear it between 5 and 9?

Brangelina…Bracelets?!

November 17th, 2009 -

Yep. That’s right–Brad and Angie can now add jewelry designer to their collective list of occupations. Inspired by, well, a snake, the limited edition gold and silver line called The Protector will be available later this week. But unless you’re in Tokyo, Dubai, London, New York or Beverly Hills, AND carry around a huge wad of disposable cash, don’t bother tracking down any serpentine ring with Angelina’s kiss of approval.

Of course, all proceeds from sales will help child victims of war and natural disasters with the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict, which Jolie cofounded in 2006.

Saving the world one accessory at a time.

A sneak peek…

asprey01

Okay, the black one COULD be cool in a gothic-chic kinda way.
asprey09

Something you might find slithering in the grass, a nice spring green for the coming prom season.

asprey02I guess we thought they’d design a line of sacred script tattoos before fine jewelry.

To each her own reptile.

Gaga Gossip

November 10th, 2009 -

gaga_gossip_girl2-216x325So, word is the infamously bizarre Lady Gaga will make a special appearance on our beloved TV series Gossip Girl very soon. The current queen of crazy style told MTV the episode will feature Lady Gaga herself singing on screen. We’re guessing a sort of operatic story–something very avant-garde. Expect nothing less, considering Gaga’s shocking red carpet ensembles that, at first glance, made the press go “eh?” But take another look at Gaga’s unique take on what it means to get dolled up. We think the Lady’s got a look that’s gonna reshape chic with her theatrical performance art entertainment fused with funky fashion displays and mainstream pop culture appearances.

Basically, we’d like to see Lady Gaga run a fashion show (minus the leotards, spankies and crotch shots, but hey, to each girl her prerogative). Black, red and white–she’s a futuristic diva whose fashion hits and misses keep us on our toes.

A few looks we dig…
